Fight the good fight along with all other believers. Take hold of eternal life. You were chosen for it when you openly told others what you believe. Many witnesses heard you.
My daughter was born just days before the passage of Roe v. Wade…and I missed it. I can pass the buck and say I was busy being a new mom, but I just ignored the news. A few months later, as the ramifications of this bill became apparent, I vowed that I would never again be so ignorant of what was going on in our government. I needed to be attentive, especially as a Christian woman.
As a result, when the word circulated around my daughter’s school that help was needed on Election Day to get out the vote for one of the parents of a child in my daughter’s class who was running for the California Assembly, I volunteered. And he won! I was hooked. I was active in California Republican Women, Californian Republican Assembly, and eventually the California Republican Party, holding offices in all of these organizations. I, also, volunteered at a crisis pregnancy center for five years as a counselor.
So much of the pro-life movement in those early days was about protecting the life of the baby. Abortion was legal and women and girls were confused about what to do with an unplanned pregnancy. The hope was to provide information and help so that the decision to abort would be changed and options offered in order to save the life of the baby.
I spent 25 years advocating for the pro-life position. I’ve marched in many Rallies for Life. Worked to elect pro-life candidates, attended conferences, and listened to prominent speakers advocating for the life of the unborn. I’ve been gaveled down by the chair and told to sit down in conventions for my views and ignored by my pro-choice Republican sisters. From the news, you would think that the pro-choice women are the only ones berated for their views.
But do you know why I left politics? Because at the whim of the voter, everything I had worked so hard to achieve could be overturned. That didn’t mean that I wasn’t interested in what was going on and spoke up when necessary, but I continued to pray that one day, Roe v Wade would be overturned.
As the ruling from the Supreme Court overturning Roe was read, I couldn’t stop the tears from popping out of my eyes. All of the effort, the time, the money spent, and the elections over the years have finally resulted in life for all. But I hope all who were so passionately involved don’t just walk away. Now is when the real work begins. When we say we are pro-life that means life for baby AND mom. We must be involved to provide help, hope, and love to women in crisis–to offer the good news of Jesus, who is the One that brings life.
Each state will be deciding how they are going to handle this delicate issue. Pay attention.
