But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere.
Over the years, I have prayed for wisdom when facing tough situations, life-changing decisions, or just downright confused.
I was talking with a friend about making a fairly simple decision about a purchase for her house. She told me she was a great researcher but a lousy decider. I’m a fairly good problem-solver and make decisions easily, but there are still times when I have no idea what to do.
Our sweet dog, Parker, has been diagnosed with Cushing’s disease this week. We have agonized over what treatment to follow for her. My journal is filled with pleas for wisdom.
As a believer in Christ, I know that He promises that the Holy Spirit will guide me. However, what does that look like? How will I know?
This morning I read the verse in James and it hit like it was printed in neon lights. Wisdom is:
Pure
Peace-loving
Gentle at all times
Willing to yield to others
Full of mercy and good deeds
Shows no favoritism
Always sincere
If i’m willing to use these criteria when evaluating a problem, God will give me wisdom. I wonder what the situation in Iraq or Afghanistan would be today if our nation’s leaders followed them? Our own country desperately needs a path forward in so many areas. Many are in quandary over personal relationships.
God loves us and grieves when He watches us flounder around in the dark. He has given us an instruction book — we need to open it up.
Let’s choose to study that book, the Bible, in 2014. Check out a local Bible Study that you might join. There are many online options and reading plans for you to choose from. Christian book stores are filled with devotional material. Make it part of your daily schedule and watch for His leading and blessing.
